UPDATE: Standoff at NSS resolved -Min. Interior

The Minister of Interior says the standoff between security personnel and inmates at the National Security Services Headquarters in Juba has been peacefully resolved. According to Michael Chanjiek, the inmates agreed to return to their cell after the intervention of community elders, including senior government officials. The Minister told the State Television, SSBC, this afternoon that the parents of Captain Kerbino Wol, managed to persuade their son to surrender the arms to the authorities. According to reports, efforts to end the matter through peaceful means was mediated by veteran politician, George Kongor, among other prominent leaders. Earlier, Capt. Keribino who has been in prison at the National Security since April reportedly disarmed a prison guard, and set free some of the inmates at the Blue House. SPLM-IO says not officially informed about freed detainees in Juba

The security service said the freed political detainees were arrested in connection with rebellious activities against the government, without revealing the exact identities of the released individuals. “The SPLM-IO has not been informed by the ICRC about the alleged release of 20 political detainees in Juba,” Puok Both Baluang, the SPLM-IO's director for information told Radio Tamazuj on Friday. Buy textbooks, not guns; departing peace monitor asks South Sudan leader

The outgoing head of IGAD's Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) for South Sudan, Festus Mogae, called on the South Sudanese political leaders to buy textbooks and turn swords into ploughshares instead of buying guns. The former Botswana president was speaking during a farewell reception held in his honour in the capital Juba on Tuesday evening. The former Chairperson of JMEC appealed to South Sudanese to come together to build their country, pointing out that many things may have gone wrong but it is time to concentrate on the future and implement the revitalized peace agreement.
