The tall, slender 19-year-old girl with delicately beautiful looks had flown more than 1,000km from Juba, South Sudan, running away from an old, but wealthy man with three wives, whom her parents were forcing her to marry. General Hoth Mai due in court over corruption claims in Australia

A former South Sudanese army chief is due to appear in court on 27 February in Australia after being accused of stealing money from his country's coffers in a report by an investigations team called The Sentry. Police authorities in Australia launched investigations into a $1.5 million mansion owned by the family of former army chief James Hoth Mai in Narre Warren, Melbourne under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The Sentry report launched in 2016 alleges that General Mai paid $1.5 million cash for a mansion in Melbourne’s southeast in 2014. James Hoth Mai served as the SPLA chief of general staff from May 2009 until April 2014. South Sudan declared cholera-free

South Sudan’s health ministry on Wednesday declared the end of cholera disease in the war-torn country, where 436 people have died from the disease since July 2017. The government and World Health Organization made the announcement after no new cases were reported over the last seven weeks. The cholera outbreak affected the country from June 18, 2016 to December 18 2017. Health minister Riek Gai Kok said the ministry recorded 20,438 cases with 436 deaths in 26 counties during the last 18 months. He minister said the outbreak was controlled through joint efforts from health partners and donors. He emphasized the importance of preventive measures

15 killed in fresh fighting over village renaming in Jonglei state

At least 15 people have been killed in fresh inter-clan clashes in Bor South County in South Sudan’s Jonglei South Sudan, several government officials said. The clashes erupted again over ownership of grazing land and the naming of a village – one clan wants its name Panweel retained while another group is seeking to have it renamed to Anuet. The renewed fighting involved four clans of the Abii community. Nyara clan was fighting against Biong, Nyichak and Manyayiel clans in the area. Ezra Mayom, an MP representing Kolnyang constituency in the state parliament, told Radio Tamazuj today that the inter-clan fighting started on Wednesday evening and continued until this morning, prompting the military to intervene. “About 15 people were found dead from both sides. But the number could increase as search continues. Deputy information minister sacked, reason unclear

South Sudan's President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, sacked deputy information and communications minister Akol Paul Kordit  on Monday evening, state media reported, quoting a decree from the president. In another decree, Kiir appointed Lily Albino Akol Akol as the new deputy minister of information and communications. The decree gave no reason for the removal of Akol who was appointed in April 2016.  But Akol’s sacking coincided with a letter he allegedly wrote to the information minister Michael Makuei  in which he said the level of  Mismanagement and corruption has reached intolerable stage in the information ministry. “I believe you will agree with me that what has been going on in our ministry is in total contradiction with objectives, ideals and values for which our people fought and sacrificed to liberate this country,” partly reads a letter dated 2 February and seen by Radio Tamazuj. The fear of today is dominant us and is quite different from the 1983 where Dr John Garang de mabior and Gen salve kiir ,Dr Riek machar, Dr wani Igga put their hands and hearts together to fight the common enemy which were Arabs from the north. South Sudan youths attack US journalist

US journalist was Tuesday critically injured by an angry mob as she covered a demonstration against the American arms embargo in Juba. The demonstration was organized by various youth groups, including the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) Youth League. The incident happened at the UN mission main camp near the Juba International Airport. Was rescued The American journalist, who was left unconscious, was rescued by UN peacekeepers and the local police who took her to UNMISS compound for medical attention. The US embassy in Juba did not wish to comment on the attack on the journalist identified as Ms Sam Mednick and said to be working for AP news agency. A local journalist who witnessed the incident said the irate youths seemed to be angry at any white person, especially American nationals.
