Rebel Group Being Led By A Woman Emerging In South Sudan,

Briefing a meeting of the Joint Defense Board in Juba, General Gabriel Jok Riak the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) of the army said the emerging rebel group is being led by a woman. “Another group is emerging under certain lady not yet confirmed…and now the lady is claiming leadership and they have divided forces between themselves,” Gen Riak said. The situation in Yei is alarming, the population is crying,” he added. He also revealed that there was a report of clashes in Yei River State early Saturday morning but the army was yet to get more details from the ground. There have been reports of insecurity in Yei for the last one week with the army blaming Thomas Cirillo’s National Salvation Front (NAS) for the insurgencies. Security personnel killed in Ruweng road accident.

At least nine National Security personnel were killed when their vehicle crashed into a truck in Ruweng State on Saturday. Seven others were seriously injured in the accident. Ruweng’s Minister of Local Government Makuac Deng Makuac told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the accident was caused due to reckless driving. He added that the National Security vehicle was moving at a high speed before slamming into a truck on the same roadway. The government official explained that the vehicle was carrying security personnel of Toma South oilfields. He pointed out that the injured soldiers were flown to Juba for treatment.” The road accident occurred between Panakuach and Pariang,” he said. Makuac noted that the crash happened around 2:30 pm. Separately, the state minister said the security situation is stable in the state. He pointed out that they had rolled out security arrangements for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

SPDF General shot dead by his bodyguard in Juba – Gen Lul

A military general was shot dead by his body guard in Juba over the weekend, the army spokesperson has said. According to General Lul Ruai, Brig Gen Peter Lahid Remy, an officer working with the Tiger division was shot dead on Sunday at his house in Khor Williang, a suburb in Juba. “On the 16th December, Brigadier General Peter Lahid Remy was shot by his own bodyguard at his own house  at Khorwiliang.” Maj Gen Lul Ruai Koang said the reason for the fatal incident is not clear. He added, the authorities are working to apprehend the suspect who until this morning(Wednesday) is still at large. “At this stage we have no idea why he was shot dead because his killer still at large and we are still hunting for him.”

50 S.Sudanese women jailed over illicit drugs in Sudan,

A Sudanese court has sentenced to 20 years in prison at least 50 South Sudanese women over illicit drug charges. Last month, the Khartoum high court found them guilty of selling cannabis, whose production, sale and use are illegal in Sudan. According to court documents, the women will serve the prison terms in prisons in Omdurman and Port Sudan. However, a South Sudanese human rights activist in Khartoum, Achol Malong, said most of the women were tea sellers that were apprehended in different parts of the Sudan. “I am calling the organizations that are working in the humanitarian sector to look into the situation of these women so that they can be released.” He said some of the women fled the 2013/2016 violence and their children have been forced into Khartoum streets because no one could take care of them. 500 cows stolen in fresh Duk Padiet raid

About 500 cows were stolen during a raid in Duk Padiet County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State on Friday, local officials said. Duk Padiet County Commissioner Martin Matien Gumwel told Radio Tamazuj Saturday that gunmen raided Alingdiir area and drove away about 500 cows. “Local youth responded to recover the stolen animals but unfortunately they could not recover them. There was no armed confrontation with the raiders,” he said. Commissioner Matien pointed out that no one was hurt in the incident. He accused armed bandits from neighboring Boma State of launching the attack. The reported attack happens barely two months after suspected armed bandits from Boma State launched two separate attacks in Duk Payuel and Jalle areas in Jonglei State, where at least14 people lost their lives.

South Sudan Army Accused of 'Brutal' Sexual Violence

·            A group of human rights lawyers has filed a lawsuit against the government of South Sudan for sexual violence on behalf of 30 women and girls who were allegedly raped by members of the army and the presidential guard. Antonia Mulvey, director of Legal Action Worldwide, a nonprofit network of human rights lawyers, said the  South Sudan army committed "brutal" sexual violence, including sexual slavery, sexual torture, rape and gang rape against women and girls. Mulvey says the complaint was lodged Thursday in Geneva at the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). "They [CEDAW] will review the complaint and a copy will be sent to the government of South Sudan for comment," Mulvey said.
