UN EVACUATED 500 WOUNDED MACHAR,S FIGHTERS TO GOMA-DRC ARMY.
Reuters has quoted unreleased Congolese army report saying the
UN mission in DRC has been transporting fighters loyal to Riek Machar to Goma.
It cited the report stating that beginning on August the 18, the
UN organized three flights per day over three days from Dungu, some 75 km (45
miles) from the South Sudan border, to the eastern city of Goma, about 1,000 km
to the south, for Riek’s fighters.
“About 500 fighters of (Riek Machar) have been evacuated and
sent to Goma. Among them are the lightly, seriously and very seriously wounded
who were treated by medical staff at the MONUSCO clinic in Dungu before
evacuation to Goma,” Reuters quoted the report.
The fighters, who surrendered their weapons before boarding UN
helicopters, were chased from South Sudan’s capital of Juba in July after heavy
fighting with forces loyal to President Salva Kiir.
Machar, who is the country’s former vice president, was also
injured and aided by the DRC mission, which is also known by its French acronym
MONUSCO.
The rebel leader was then turned over to DRC authorities and is
currently undergoing medical treatment in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.
The government of South Sudan often expresses and questions the
neutrality and seriousness of UN in light of such activities. It has at times
accused UN of championing a regime in South Sudan.
Last weekend the government questioned UNSC why the UN Mission
in DRC transported Simon Gatwech. The chief of Riek’s army is under UN, EU and
US sanctions.
UNSC said it was also expressed “concern” that Gatwech was
airlifted by the UN. The airlifts were personally authorized by the UN SG
according to his spokesman when he announced evacuation of Riek Machar.
Transporting Gatwech violates UN’s own sanctions against him
