BOR AUGUST 14, 2016 [Gurtong] – The order came after Municipality Council found out that most of food items distributed by humanitarian agencies are being sold in large quantities in Bor markets.
In 2014, the former governor of Jognlei state, John Kong Nyuon, warned residents against the selling of relief food items.
Mayor Akim Ajieth Buuny said leaders of squatters blocks and the leaders of community have been briefed on the new order which banned selling of food items in Bor.
“We are now investigating to know who are involved in the selling of relief foods, are these people who are working with relief agencies or the community leaders responsible for the distribution of the food who are selling relief food to business people?,” Akim Ajieth wants to know.
“Relief goods should be prohibited sale because these items are not meant for the market, they are meant for vulnerable groups. This is not allowed and we consider it has an unacceptable behaviour,” He said.
The most active agencies who delivered Food to Jonglei State are UNHCR, WFP, and Catholic Relief Service.
